Cleansing and brightening
The kiwi plant (Actinidia chinensis, the Chinese gooseberry) is native to the Yangtze valley in Northern China and the Zhejiang province in Eastern China. It is a vigorous climbing plant, with a hairy skin that covers the green flesh of the kiwi fruit.
In China, the fruit was unpopular and was only eaten for medicinal purposes as a tonic to the health. An eminent plant explorer, E. H. Wilson, shipped the first seeds from Asia to England, France and the U.S. in the early 1900s, where they were grown as ornamental vines. The first seed lot was planted in 1906 and the ornamental vine was bred from then on for its crop of nutritious fruit, rather than for its decorative appearance. However, their commercial potential was not truly recognised until the 1960s in New Zealand. The name was given in the 1960s in recognition of the national bird of New Zealand, the kiwi. The fruits are egg-shaped, fuzzy and brown.
Kiwi fruits are full of vitamins and minerals and are highly nutritious. They contain a very high level of vitamin C, exceeding that of oranges, as well as excellent levels of vitamins E and A, and high levels of potassium.
Raw kiwi fruits contain an enzyme called actinidin and this acts to dissolve protein. Enzymes are an organic chemical substance made by living cells; they accelerate a chemical reaction and are known as catalysts. All living cells contain a large number of different enzymes and are dependent on their activity for their normal functions. Enzymes are vital in all cellular processes and are essential, for example, in breaking down large molecules into smaller ones.
The action of actinidin will break down protein-based, dead skin cells and dirt on the skin. This can then be removed, leaving the skin fresh and clean. The other vitamins and minerals in the fruit are highly nutritious for the skin. We can achieve this cleansing and nourishing process by using the fruit fresh, mulched and blended straight in to the product. The vitamin content greatly improves skin condition. We use fresh kiwi fruit to deeply nourish the skin, leaving it fresh and glowing.
